Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization
Department of Dynamics of Complex Fluids
Three PhD positions are available at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization (located in Goettingen, Germany) in the Department of Dynamics of Complex Fluids. The Department of Dynamics of Complex Fluids offers a highly interdisciplinary environment and excellent research capabilities in the field of complex fluids. We are active in a large variety of research topics such as dry and wet granular matter, biological matter, microfluidics, wetting, fluid interfaces, liquid crystals, and dynamics of phase separation. Detailed information can be found on the homepages of our department and our institute.
Within the Hierarchy network, different PhD projects can be conducted in our department. Examples could be:
- Influence of surface wetting in hierarchical self-organization of colloidal and nanoparticles in liquid crystal hosts.
- Study of colloidal flow in a liquid crystal medium in microchannels and the influence of external stimuli.
- Study of defect structures in smectic films as matrices for self-organizing systems.
This AFM image shows, as an illustration to the last topic, the surface of a smectic film in which focal conic domains are formed on a substrate possessing a square-shaped anchoring pattern:
Applications from all countries (except Germany) are welcome. Applicants should have a Masters (or equivalent) degree in physics or chemistry.
